Religion test retake

Today in class we got to retake the Religions test that we took yesterday if we got lower than a 70 on it and I got lower than a 70, if you get better than a 70 on this test he will give a 70, on my test yesterday I got a sixty eight percent so hopefully I did better even though its not that big of a difference. Mr. Schick just graded the test and I got an eight percent this time so he will pull my grade up on the test from a sixty eight percent to a seventy percent. Also today is the last day of the quarter so this is the last day that we are going to have in this class because I have Mr. Frendryk next semester. And if we finished everything we got to do our blog and thats all we did in this class.

Religions test

Today in class we took a test on the Five Major Religions that we have been reviewing in class this unit. Overall I think that I did relatively okay but I do think that I got a couple religions mixed up with the others. I think that what I studied for the test really did help me. What I studied was the notes that we took in our notebook with Mr. Schick. I studied a lot fir this test because I needed to pass it in order to keep my grade a B in this class. He just graded our tests so we can see what we got but he still needs to put it in.

Today in class we reviewed for our religion test that we will be having this Friday, but if it snows too much and we do not have school on Friday then we will have the test on this Thursday because Friday is the end of the quarter. What we did is we read our paragraphs which we typed in class yesterday when we had a sub. We read the paragraphs out loud and then Mr. Schick told us what would and would not be on the test. Their will be 25 questions and they will all be multiple choice and it will ask the question and then the answers will be A. Christianity B. Islam C. Hinduism D. Buddhism and E. Judaism.

Religion paragraphs

Christianity has around 2.2 billion adherents which is the largest in the world, we call them Christians. The geographic locations are Europe, the Americas, and Southern Africa. The denominations are Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Protestants (Lutherans, Methodists, Baptists, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, and many more). The founder of Christianity is Jesus Christ (Christianity is Abrahamic in origin). The holy book is the Bible, especially the New Testament (gospels). Their beliefs are the Jesus is both human and divine- the son of God; he led a virtuous life; he was crucified, died, buried, and resurrected; he ascended into heaven where he reigns with God the Father. The pope is the head of the Catholic Church, Priests are local authorities.

Islam has around 1.5 billion adherents (second largest in the world), we call them Muslims. The geographic locations are Indonesia, Middle East, and North Africa. Denominations are Sunnis (75-90%), Shiites (10-20%). The founder is Muhammed (570-632). The holy book is the Qur'an (Koran). The beliefs are monotheistic, Abrahamic, Five Pillars(testimony, prayer, alms-giving, fasting pilgrimage). Muslims see their purpose in life as serving and submitting to Allah (God), and observing Islamic law.

Hinduism has around 1.1 billion adherents which is this the third largest in the world, we call them Hindus. The geographic locations are India and Nepal. The holy book is the Vedas- eternal truths revealed to ancient sages; composed in verse form (meant to be sung and easily memorized). There is no distinctive founder- it is a series of intellectual or philosophical points of vie, rather than a rigid, strict sets of beliefs- probably the oldest extant religion; although Hinduism is a religion that a way of life, or a faith.

Buddhism has 500 million to 1.5 billion adherents (estimates vary quite a bit), we call them Buddhists. The geographic locations are Southeast Asia, China, Nepal, Japan (there are 1.2 million Buddhists in the United States). The founder is Siddhartha Gautama. Denominations are Tibetan, Zen, Theravada, and Amidst. The Four Noble Truths are 1. There is suffering, 2. Attachment to desire is the origin of suffering, 3. There is a cessation of suffering, 4. The Eight fold Path will lead to the cessation of suffering. the Eight fold path is Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Dedication.

Judaism has 14-18 million adherents (ninth largest in the world), we call them Jews. The geographic locations are Israel (6.4 million, 75.4%), US (5.3-7 million, 1.7%-2.6%). The founder is Abraham. The holy book is the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy). Their beliefs are ethical monotheism- God is one, and concerned with the actions of human kind, Ten Commandments, and 13 Principals of Faith.

today

Today in class we first played a game where you had to guess whether the statement was from the Quran or the Bible. We had to get at least a ninety percent on it and the quiz was out of twenty so we had to get an eighteen out of twenty to get an A. It took the class a couple times before we were able to get an A, but it was relatively easy after we played it a couple times because the statements started to repeat. After we finished that we went back to the packet on Religion and we started to finish highlighting the packet. We didn't finish highlighting it but we started to talk about Judaism.

• Reliable statistics on the number of adherents are difficult to obtain 
• These four religions together claim the adherence of 77 percent of the world's people: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism
• Pew estimates that 2.2 billion people in the world view themselves as Christian, 1.6 billion as Muslim, 1 billion as Hindu, and 500 million as Buddhists
• In South Asia, around two-thirds of the people are Hindus and one-third Muslims

Three questions

The four basic text in use by Hindus are 
1. Rig-Veda  “Knowledge of the Hymns of Praise”, for recitation it contains 1017 hymns 
2. Sama-Veda “Knowledge of the Melodies”, for chanting it contains 1028 hymns 
3. Yajur-Veda “Knowledge of the Sacrificial formulas”, for liturgy it contains 1028 hymns 
4. Atharva-Veda  “Knowledge of the Magic formulas”, named after a kind of group of priests it contains 730 hymns. 

I think that that the practice of indulgence is ones way of reducing the amount of punishment one has from sin. I think that Martin Luther objected to indulgences is because you should not be able to pay the church and expect that God will just forgive you. My research led me to be against indulgence because I agree that you should not just be able to pay the church and expect forgiveness from God. 

  

A Hajj is the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. This takes place in the last month of the year, and it is expected that all Muslims are to make at least once during their lifetime. It is a huge gathering of people from around the world, and everyone is crammed in a space to represent unity. 

Five religion question

According to the CIA World Facebook, the percentage of the five religions that we have been studying in class are Christian 31.4%, Muslim 23.2%, Hindu 15%, Buddhist 7.1%, Jewish 0.2%. 

According to adherents.com, it says Christianity is 33%, Islam is 21%, Hinduism is 14%, Buddhism is 6%, and Judaism is 0.22%.
