Maps

Today in class we learnt about how maps are a whole lie! We watched a video saying that said something about how Germany is actually fourteen times smaller than Africa but on the map the two are almost the same size. The video went onto talking about turning that map upside down so south is north, north is south, east is west, and west is east. If the map would it actually change to be like that I don't know how I would feel about it. At first it would probably be really confusing to understand but I would eventually probably be able to figure it out.
Some notes I took:

  • First world map prepares by Eratosthenes (276-194 BC)
  • Improvements to world map later made by Ptolemy
  • After Ptolemy, advancements in cartography, primarily made outside of Europe by Chinese and Islamic world
  • Map making revived during the Age of Exploration and Discovery
